My name is Makeda Mikael, and I’m a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN/LDN). My nutrition journey has not been a straight path. From an early age, I can remember trailing behind my parents in the grocery store, watching them carefully read nutrition labels and select wholesome items. To my and my brother’s major disappointment, it was rarely ever Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. I say rarely because my parents taught us to eat in moderation and would sometimes buy foods that are deemed “unhealthy”. Needless to say, my parents instilled a curiosity within me and a passion for nutrition.
Fast forward to my undergraduate years when I didn’t know exactly the direction I was going with my life. After graduation, I found myself working in a government position for the Maryland Transit Administration (wayyy different from anything I’d ever done in school). As grateful as I was for that position, I knew it was not what I was meant to be doing. Attempting to get serious with my life, I sat back and noticed what I would spend a majority of my time on, whether outside of work or on my lunch breaks. It was always health-related. Revising recipes, making meal plans, researching new trends in nutrition and the latest research on nutrition…long story short – I became a dietitian three years later.
I have my parents, my husband, and my wonderful family to thank for all the support they’ve given me throughout the years and helped me get to where I am today.
